Hayley Marsh RVN (Senior veterinary nurse)

We are pleased to announce that Hayley is back!  After taking maternity leave following the birth of  Lewis Daniel on 15th October 2007 she is returning to us on a part-time basis, working two days per week - and we’re all very glad to be working with her again.

Having started work at Orchard in September 2002, Hayley had previously worked at the wildlife park at Cricket St Thomas as a junior zoo keeper, mainly with primates (although she has some interesting tales about mercats as well). Working with primates has given Hayley an interest in this group and she would like to develop this area at some stage.

Hayley qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 2004 after 2 years training at Orchard Veterinary Group, having completed a massive portfolio of 52 case logs, many of which have to be at least 1000 words long and sat a range of examinations, written and practical, set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. To say that Veterinary Nursing training is demanding is an understatement.  Hayley is now one of our senior nurses, working with Emma with particular responsibility for personnel and an invaluable member of our clinical staff.

Hayley is the proud owner of 2 corn snakes named Jack Daniels and Coke although with all her studying obviously she has no personal knowledge of these beverages and assures me she was told about them by a friend!

Lisa lives in Glastonbury and is a graduate of the Bristol University Nursing Degree course having qualified in 2008.  Unlike the practice based Veterinary Nursing diploma this University based course is of 4 years duration and offers qualifications in practice management and administration as well as the nursing qualification.

Although it is somewhat more academic in emphasis the students are required to do a lot of practical, hands-on nursing at the Veterinary Department of Bristol University as well as to spend time in general practice gaining further practical experience.

Lisa did her in-practice training here at Orchard veterinary group and we were so impressed while she was here we gave her the job once she qualified!

Lisa has the cleanest and shiniest car of all the staff - how she finds time to keep it that way I’ll never know!

Emma Aitken RVN - (Senior nurse clinical)

We won’t be seeing much of Emma for a while I’m afraid.  It’s good news really because she has left on maternity leave with her (and James’s) first baby due in September 2008.  Everyone here wishes you the best of luck and we’re all looking forward to you coming back

Emma trained as a veterinary nurse at Orchard Veterinary Group and qualified in 2005 after three years of study, completing a large portfolio of case logs and passing 2 sets of examinations set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.  Emma has organised many events for clients such as meetings on fear of fireworks, puppy parties and pet first aid.  More recently she launched and is the driving force behind the Orchard Veterinary Group’s practice plan scheme to try to help pet owners by spreading the cost of payments throughout the year.  She is currently studying for the prestigious Diploma of veterinary Nursing.

Emma and James are the proud owners of three cats - Fred (named after Frederick Chopin), Claude (named after Claude Debussy) and Mouse (named after... a mouse, I guess).
