The ferret pages

Ferrets are closely related to species such as the stoat, weasel, pine marten, otter, polecat, mongoose and mink.  This group is collectively known as Mustidae and are a completely different type of carnivore to dogs (Canidae) and cats (Felidae) with their own special characteristics.  They are most certainly NOT (as some people believe) rodents in any way shape or form!

They are playful, mischievous and inquisitive as individuals and ten times more so as a group, if you’ve never seen a “business” (the collective noun for ferrets) of ferrets playing and interacting together you’ve missed a treat.

They make excellent pets and will provide endless amusement but they are not for everyone and should certainly never be acquired without doing a lot of looking into the subject in advance and preferably spending time with other peoples’ ferrets first.

At Orchard vet group we see quite a few ferrets and have built up quite a number of case logs.  Through the web-site I hope to be able to share a few of the more interesting ones with you as well as cover some of the basics such as neutering, vaccination and disease control.

Ferret case reports in pictures are available for spaying and removal of a foreign body.
