The dental health care of our pets is a serious business. Why? Because if teeth
aren’t cared for correctly it can lead, not only to pain and discomfort in the mouth
but to serious health problems elsewhere in the body.
Without the correct type of care teeth can become coated with a rough deposit called
calculus. This in turn harbours plaque, a bacterial slime that quickly attacks gum
and even bone causing pain, redness and bleeding, finally eating into the support
structures of the tooth itself causing it to become loose or fall out.
Bacteria from the mouth can also spread, via the blood stream, to other organs such
as the heart or kidney causing further damage leading to heart valve disease and
infections.
What can we do about it? There is no doubt that the best form of oral care you can
do at home is daily brushing with a veterinary toothpaste and brush. If you are
not able to do this alternatives are available such as diet or mouth wash. Whatever
you are doing in the way of home care must be backed up with regular dental checkups
by a vet or veterinary nurse to make sure that any problems are treated promptly
before serious damage occurs.
